Typhoon Ketsana / Ondoy Relief Please!

THE PHILIPPINES NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Over the weekend, Tropical Storm Ketsana (Philippine name Typhoon Ondoy) ravaged most of the island of Luzon, leaving catastrophe in its wake. The latest reports say that at least 100 people were left dead, and countless thousands are displaced and/or missing. The Typhoon wreaked havoc over the nation's capital, Manila, and the nearby provinces, leaving a total of over Php109 Million (US$2,290,000) in damages.

I live in the Las Piñas City area, which is south of the more affected areas, and, thankfully, we got nothing more than the streets being turned into ankle-high rivers. D: Sadly, up north in Manila, Quezon City, and Rizal Province, things are much, much worse. The record-breaking rainfall Typhoon Ondoy caused brought floodwaters that reached more than 2 meters high in some areas. High tide didn't help. :/

Even De La Salle University wasn't spared. It's usually only the Taft Avenue area that gets flooded, in front of the school, but the waters even reached inside the university, leaving students and personnel trapped over the weekend. I personally know a few people who lost all their possessions to the raging waters, and I'm glad they're safe now. Photos of the school:

My mom and siblings are fine, in Mauban, Quezon, even if the Typhoon made landfall just a couple hundred kilometers north of them (Infanta). It was a good thing they lived right next to the more or less elevated highway. Things don't seem well for my relatives who lived nearer the sea, though. I still haven't heard from them.

Here's a partial breakdown of casualties as of 6AM this morning. Data taken from GMANews.tv, who took this from the National Disaster Coordinating Council:

• National Capital Region - 7 (3 in Muntinlupa, 2 in NIA Road, QC, 1 Marikina City, 1 in Brgy. Bato, San Juan)
• Cordillera Administrative Region - 1 (Kabugao, Apayao)
• Region III - 22 (10 in Bulacan and 12 in Arayat, Pampanga)
• Region IV-A - 56 (1 in Calaca, Batangas, 1 in Calauag Quezon; 23 in Tanay, Rizal; 10 in Angono; 5 in Baras; 3 in Montalban; 2 in Cavite; 5 in Laguna; and 1 in Theresa and 5 military personnel)

32 missing
• 1 in Kabayan, Benguet
• 20 in Tanay, Rizal
• 9 in Infante, Pangasinan
• 2 in Arayat, Pampanga

• Affected Population: 86, 313 families / 435, 646 people

• Partial total of Evacuees: 23, 126 families / 115,898 people in 204 evacuation centers

Cost of damage: Total P60.5M (infrastructure - P41M; schools P19. M and
agriculture - P0.212 M)

Survivor Philippines: Engrish, Anyone?

So I've been stalking around some of the more popular GMA7 blogsites, and I stumbled upon this, the blog for the upcoming reality series, Survivor Philippines. Since it's GMA7, it's guaranteed to be a hit (sorry for all the non-Kapuso out there: I'm telling the truth), but the potential contestants seem to be a little gramatically challenged. XP

Here are some excerpts from blog comments, errors and all:

Roderick T. Marquez says, "i’ll try my best to become a survivor philippines. i know i want this chalenges." Yes, Roderick, you'll become the show itself. :)

Loel Joy Mesias: "i like tihs challenge. i’m excited to join this first pinoy survivor sole..hope you’ll select me as one of the contestant." Mhmm, Loel, I know that Philippine shoes aren't that high quality, but what makes you think that you'd be stronger than those?

Next comes Michelle C. Tado, who almost seemed to me to be serious about this with her lengthy comment. Nevertheless, she says, "I could say that this new challenges will help to an individual to become more resourceful,flexible in doing things which is hard." Doing hard things certainly does need flexibility. :/

She continues, "I really want to join in this competition because I want to know what I can do more.To experience how to be independent,to prove to my family that I can do things better rather than judging me all the times…I will do this for my Family even though they treated me not so good.." Not so good, eh? What makes you think that Survivor would accept someone like you all the times?

Elizar Managay seems to have a firm grasp of the Philippine setting when he said, "I do believe that with this reality show, we will prove again that we are not just a residue squeeze out from an asian country but as a human race with different kind of DNA to prove in the entire world. count me in I’ll be in the audition dates." No, Elizar, you're the squeeze out: mag-Tagalog ka nalang, tsong. And if you want to have different DNA, be my guest: they're looking for the first genetically modified human. Who knows? You could have six legs like those GMO chickens. It would definitely help you win.

Ramiel H. Flores, on the other hand, sticks to pure brawn: "Wanna be one of my challenger?????Grrrrr!!!!!!" No thanks, I'll pass. Grrrr right back at you.

Leanderson T. Alon has a flair for stating the obvious: "I want to be the first survivor because i have what it takes to be the first Pinoy Sole Survivor." Captain Obvious to the rescue!

Mayonick B. Caoayan not only has a unique name, but a similarly unique way of expressing his thoughts: "yes!this is my wildest dream to be a part of this reality shows and i”d been waiting for this in a long decade,this the time for me to know my real deep personality in my life," Need I explain more?

Jennifer Ortega finds this opportunity to make friends. She concludes her comment, ". kita kits guys sa audition.. god bless us po add me po friendster.." followed by her e-mail address.

Last but definitely not least is "Dadams", who summaraizes everyone's aspirations in one sentence: "LET’S SEE WHO IS BE THE FIRST PINOY SOLE SURIVOR"

Of course, a lot of those who attempted to use (or abuse) English did write commendably. Praise them for not making us more of an international laughingstock. Still, laughing at others' mistakes is more fun. XD

A public transit nightmare, eh? Well, I don't think I can call it a nightmare, nor was it a totally bad experience for me, but it definitely stupid and wrong. XD

Well, it was very simple, really. I rode the bus home from school, and it was really, really late. Sort of around 8:00pm, when I was supposed to be home by 5. Anyway, I was quite drowsy by the time, and with the really cool airconditioning, I fell asleep.

By the time I woke up, I had missed my stop by three kilometers or so, and when I got down, it was just my luck that it started to rain. Rain cats-and-dogs, mind you. I had no extra cash left to take a bus or jeepney back to the street where I was supposed to get off, so I had to walk in the rain home. T_T
